Leader: I was wrong.
People: “I was wrong” is the beginning of becoming a better ally and the beginning of our land acknowledgement.
Leader: For many thousands of years the people of the Three Fires Confederacy, Odawa, Potawatami and Ojibwe, known as the Anishinaabeg and Lunaapeew – as well as our neighbours, the Lunaapeew at Delaware Nation and B-kej-wanong Walpole Island First Nation – have sought to walk gently and respectfully on this land. Through the McKee Purchase Treaty of 1790, Treaties 2 and 116, and the Longwoods Purchase Treaty of 1819, Treaty 21, we entered into a sacred covenant with these nations and peoples.
People: These treaties were to be “for as long as the sun shines, the rivers flow, and the grass grows.” They form part of Canada’s highest laws and flow from Indigenous law, rooted in the land itself. These laws bind us all. We recommit ourselves to honouring our obligations and responsibilities as true treaty people.
Leader: At the same time, we seek a renewed relationship with the Indigenous Peoples of this land, one now based on honour, listening, and deep respect.
People: From many places and peoples we come to pray.
Leader: We uphold our common stewardship of creation and our common birthplace of God's earth.
People: We respect our place on this land and move forward in love and peace.
Leader: I was wrong.
People: I recognize the role I have played in the past as an unaware immigrant settler and my complicity in Indigenous erasure. I recognize that land acknowledgements are important to every gathering, but that they are an introduction, a gateway to deeper and more involved action.
