Leader: I was wrong. I am sorry.
For over 11,000 years the peoples of the Three Fires Confederacy, the Odawa, Potawatami and Ojibwe, known as the Anishinaabeg and Lunaapeew – as well as our neighbours, the Lunaapeew at Delaware Nation and Bkejwanong Walpole Island First Nation – have sought to walk gently and respectfully on this land. In 1790, the McKee Purchase Treaty, Treaties 2 and 116, and in 1819, the Longwoods Purchase Treaty, Treaty 21, were signed by the Crown.
People: And thus we entered into a sacred covenant for as long as the sun shines, the rivers flow, and the grass grows.
Leader: We know that the rights within these treaties have not been upheld. As settlers who benefit from colonization, it is up to us to help move to a future where we truly share the land and the resources it gives us, to do so with respect and generosity, to educate ourselves, to act immediately.
I was wrong. I didn’t know some of this; I ignored some of this.
People: We were wrong. We are sorry. We need to show it.
